Electronic music artist Tor Lundvall is enjoying something of a breakthrough year in 2006, his Empty City album of evocative "ghost ambient" tracks generating his highest critical attention and fastest sales to date. Tor's music was heard recently on NPR radio stations by 200,000 listeners, on the famous "Hearts of Space" radio program.
Announced November '06 is Tor Lundvall's next release, a limited edition EP called Yule, described as "snowy soundscapes and celebratory songs for the season."
Tor explains with his Yule EP he has attempted to capture "another side" of the holiday season than the typical Christmas album, offering all original compositions in a "blurred and distant," slightly melancholic form.
Tor Lundvall comments on Yule
I always find that the time period following Thanksgiving through early January carries a unique and strange mood to it other than the obvious stress of Holiday madness. As a child, I remember those cold, dark evenings waiting for hours in my mother's car while she shopped for groceries or presents. I would hear the songs of the season echoing and drifting faintly through the parking lots of department stores and supermarkets. The blurred and distant sound was far more appealing to me than Christmas Carols being shouted at close range. There was a special melancholic beauty about these moments that has never left me.
With a handful of recordings, I have attempted to capture another side of the Holiday season. The settings range from slushy, illuminated train stations, to the lonely trees of January still entangled with blue lights long after the season has ended. I'm also pleased that this EP gives me the opportunity to release the full length version of "The Falling Snow", which was previously only available in a much shorter, remixed form on the Cynfeirdd "Eisteddfod" compilation. This piece was recorded almost nine years ago during a snowstorm, and has been a constant companion while I paint during the winter months.
